Essential training for AusHealth and workplace collectors.
View all courses

Who takes this course?

AusHealth’s Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing (HLTPAT005) is an essential unit of competency for AusHealth Collectors and elected in-house collection officers for organisations, in order to conduct National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited drug testing.

This also applies to individuals working in collection centres, in hospitals, in other health care environments and workplaces where drugs of abuse testing takes place.

As industry leaders in drug and alcohol testing and training, AusHealth offers both off-the-shelf and contextualised courses for all organisations. Our highly-qualified trainers deliver only the most cutting-edge course for your ever-changing world, ensuring your business is in line with the current Australian Standards and Industry requirements.

What will I learn?

In this course, participants will learn how to:

  • Correctly perform specimen collection and screening for on-site drug and alcohol testing
  • Collect specimens for drug abuse testing via the nationally accredited unit of competency HLTPAT005 AS 3547:2019 Breath alcohol testing devices for personal use
  • AS/NZS 4760:2019 procedures for specimen collection, as well as the detection and quantitation of drugs in oral fluid
  • AS/NZS 4308:2008 procedures for specimen collection a as well as the detection and quantitation of drugs of abuse in urine
  • Demonstrate how to obtain a breath, oral fluid and urine specimen, follow chain of custody and record information correctly.

How do I get certified?

In addition to face-to-face coursework, participants must undergo a workplace observation test to demonstrate they are competent in sample collection.

Under the observation of an experienced collector, participants will need to demonstrate:

  • Satisfactory collection of one (1) breath and one (1) oral fluid specimen
  • Satisfactory collection of one (1) breath and one (1) urine specimen.

The workplace observation must be observed and signed off by an experienced collector (undertaking duties for at least 18 hours per fortnight).

This must be organised and undertaken in your own time within three months of coursework completion.

All paperwork must be submitted to AusHealth Work within this time.

If you do not have someone in your workplace that can undertake the observation, you can engage an AusHealth Work Collector to attend your workplace and complete the observation.
This will incur an additional fee.

Participants will receive a Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing (HLTPAT005) certification recognised by ASQA. This allows you to conduct drug tests for a NATA accredited company.
