What is Kombucha?

Kombucha is an ancient beverage originating from China more than 2,200 years ago and has gained considerable popularity in recent years for its supposed “detoxifying and energising properties”. However, as a fermented drink it contains some alcohol – up to 0.5% (by volume).

How much would you need to drink to for it to show in a drug and alcohol test?

The alcohol content in home-made Kombucha varies considerably and can reach 1% or more. However, because the alcohol content is so low, you would need to consume a lot to place yourself in the range of concern.  As a rough guide, to reach a BrAC of 0.02%, a 70 kg man would need to drink 8 to 12 cans of Kombucha in one sitting (the equivalent of one can of full strength beer (350 ml).
